After the Rain

A Summer rain refreshed last night and I’ve never appreciated a rain more than this Summer with the news of drought from important farming areas in the U.S.  Even the Country fairs are impacted as crops have withered and died and herds are smaller.

The rain drops lingering on petals refresh.

A haze of humidity hovers but somehow the drops glistening in the heat cool thoughts and keep me outside longer than usual on such a close day.

Hydrangea ‘Pistachio’

New shrubs are being tested; they sound good in a catalog but will they stand up to the Summer heat and shortage of cleansing rains?  Hydrangea ‘Pistachio’ shows promise.

The temptation is to linger at the breakfast table with the newly cut dahlias gracing the morning.  But gardeners need to push themselves to be outside with the plants, feel the heat, sweat in the humidity but also be refreshed after the rain.

We are having the opposite weather to you Jayne – rain rain and more rain with one or two sunny patches. The rain brings with it its own problems just as too much sun does – I feel our summer is almost over before it has begun. Your plants don’t look as if they are faring too badly – love the last picture it looks a bit like a candelabra primrose

  2. Well, I made a terrible experiment this summer. I filled my sunny courtyard with hydrangeas. All but the Annabels burned up, so they are being transplanted today. Left standing are the privet topiaries. Thanks for your thoughtful analysis of the bench.

I saw Hydrangea ‘Pistachio’ at a nursery not long ago. I was really wowed but the $35 price tag kept me from purchasing it. Yours looks fabulous. I’m so glad you received rain. Here’s to much more of it. But not too much. 🙂
